There’s a heat in her stomach that won’t go away. It bubbles and expands, surging through her like a searing pain, but it doesn’t hurt. It’s pleasant with its warmth and she appreciates it, this feeling, whatever it is, making her strong. It doesn’t make much sense, but she knows he’s the cause and she appreciates him for that indirect warmth.

“Orihime,” there’s a soft whisper in the night and her breath catches in her throat, “you must be cold out here all alone.” It’s Ishida, she already knows from that lilt and progressive pattern of speech. He isn’t the one who makes her feel warm but his words are reassuring and that makes up for it. “Shouldn’t you come back inside before you catch cold?”

She jerks her head in a stubborn manner of disagreement and lets a funny little smile slip onto her face. “But Ishida-kun! The sun’s setting and I never miss that!”

“We’re in Soul Society, it’s not real.” She’s being reprimanded, but she doesn’t care. No, because anything can be real if you want it to be. And that’s why she loves daydreaming so much, because it offers more than reality ever could.

“Hmm,” she murmurs quietly, rocking back and forth on her heels. “Why can’t it be real?” she asks him in such a way that he takes longer than he’s ever taken to answer her.

“Because, nothing is real in death.”

“ … Is that what you believe?”

He nods and doesn’t say anything else. Belief is one’s own opinion. She wouldn’t refute it or claim it as her own. She just accepts and they go on with their separate lines of thinking.

Orihime bled out on the ground, a harsh pant escaping her lips. “Wha-what are you doing?!” she demanded sharply. She picked herself off the slate ground that bit into her skin and rose to look at Aizen with fury in her eyes. “Don’t touch them!” He had them, he had them both. Ichigo … and Uryuu. Why? This wasn’t fair, this wasn’t right, this wasn’t a game and he had them. What was he planning to do with them?

“Pretty girls should just sit and watch instead of making all that fuss.” The sultry command was quick to be had and Orihime wished she could punch him or even slap him for his audacity. But she couldn’t. Her action wouldn’t even be allowed on his person, probably. There were Arrancar all around the room, surrounding them. She had nothing she could do but nurse her wound, call out her power and heal herself in silence. Ichigo … would he be all right? He had so many wounds she didn’t know if he would make it. And Uryuu, he looked even worse than Ichigo, if that was possible. And there was nothing she could do … nothing at all. She was left to her thoughts and that was all she had. Her eyes hardened when Aizen bent down and stroked lightly at Ichigo’s chin in that beguiling way that said to her and her alone that the man had plans involving the person in question. What plans did he have for Ichigo? What could he possibly want with someone that was as noble and righteous as Kurosaki Ichigo? Aizen had no right to touch him in that way, as if Ichigo wasn’t anything more than a pawn to be used and had and then tossed aside like so many other things in life.

Stop, she wanted to shout, but Uryuu caught her eyes with his own and there was a knowing look about them that threw her through a loop. It was with his eyes that he begged her to stay put and wait things out. This isn’t real, was what he was saying with those eyes. Remember? Nothing’s real in death.

It hurt, but she accepted. Just like she had accepted in the past. There was nothing else for her to do, even if she didn’t want to claim that reality as her own.
