kannnichtfranz . Happy Belated Birthday again~! =D Her prompt was “manly bonding”, which I thus interpreted as “drinking night! FUN!”
“Oi, oi, Hisagi, you doing anything right now?”
Shuuhei turned his head to look at his redheaded underclassman, a sigh escaping in a soft breath of air. “Not at the moment, Abarai-kun, I was just headed back to my room.”
“Good, good. Ya wanna go drinking with the guys tonight, then? It’ll be great!”
There was such hope in the boy’s voice that he couldn’t turn him down right away. He settled for smiling and replying with a vague, “Fine, I’ll join you this time. But only for a little bit, all right? I do have things to do tonight.” A bob of the head and then the redhead was slinging an arm over his shoulders, leading him out of the dormitory, books and all. “Er, we’re going now?” Shuuhei’s tone came out incredulous. “I thought you meant tonight!”
“It is night!” Renji replied back animatedly, waving a hand to a window as they passed by it. “See! It’s dark outside.”
Figuring he was going to lose this battle, no matter what, Shuuhei conceded defeat and let himself be dragged off to wherever drinking night was held. They ended up in a small bar just on the outskirts of Seireitei; the First District to be technical about the location, but that district was tame enough to have been a part of Seireitei itself so Shuuhei had never actually considered it as Rukongai. He had lived in much worse places, worse districts that required one to always be on their guard. The First District was a docile bunny, in other words, when compared to the ravage wolves of District Eighty and the rest.
Renji was being polite this evening, he noticed. The boy had even held the door open for him, putting Shuuhei a bit on edge concerning the motive behind that politeness, but he admitted it was a nice gesture and nudged the redhead playfully in the side as he passed, entering the bar. “Seems you do know how to be civil. And here I thought you were just my lovable kouhai with the attitude.” He earned a snort from Renji after saying this, and he laughed, having expected the response. “So, who’s joining us this fine evening?” He stressed the evening part, making it apparent that it wasn’t quite ‘night’ yet like Renji seemed to believe.
“Just some friends,” Renji retorted in that noncommittal way of his, taking a seat in a booth and motioning for Shuuhei to do the same. “We’ll wait for ‘em to show up and then I’ll introduce you to ‘em!”
Thankfully, Shuuhei didn’t have to wait long for the first person to make an appearance, happy to see another friendly face in the form of Kira Izuru. “Yo! Kira-kun! How’s it going?” The blond flashed a small grin to his upperclassman as he slid into the booth to take a seat next to Renji. “Did Abarai-kun con you in to coming to?”
“Oi! What are you saying?” Renji pretended to look hurt. “I’ll have you know I didn’t con anyone!”
Shuuhei rolled his eyes and noted Izuru was doing the same. Great minds think alike and all that. Next came Iba, the only one in the group nearing graduation. It was, after all, his final year. Perhaps that was why Renji had been so insist on this drinking night. He knew the redhead had a soft spot when it came to his friends, even if Renji wasn’t quick to admit it. After Iba came three girls Shuuhei wasn’t too familiar with and just assumed they were there for a girls’ night out. He was sadly mistaken.
“Renji! You idiot! Why wasn’t I invited?! Rangiku-san had to even tell me about it!”
A scowl made itself known on the redhead’s face. “Maybe ya didn’t get invited for a reason, Rukia.”
Oh, Shuuhei thought with a snicker, this is that girl that has Abarai whipped, I should have known …
“How come Rangiku-san and Momo-chan were invited, then?” demanded the dark haired girl, hands on her hips and scowling just as much as Renji by this point. She apparently wasn’t one to back down from a good fight.
“’Cause they’re not about to turn this fuckin’ night into disaster’s that’s why!” Renji shouted back, voice raising loudly and booming throughout the quaint little tavern. They were getting quite a few odd looks from the other bar residences. The people here weren’t used to seeing such vulgarity, as it were. Tonight, Shuuhei mused, was going to be rather fun.
And fun it was. Izuru ended up getting drunk and confessing undying love for Momo. Rangiku had cooed with a slur that they should get married now since it was all out in the open. Iba had even tried to take advantage of a drunken Rangiku and ended up with a sizeable lump to his head. As for Renji and Rukia, they had disappeared some time during all the interactions and Shuuhei couldn’t quite remember where they had gone. His mind had been a little hazy, after all, once he had taken his fair share of shots, whiskey making him feel pleasantly warm. He did, however, recall later that he had ended up doing a little strip show, but that was another story and one he tried to keep on the down low long after he had become a proper shinigami.
