Title: Saving Grace
Fandom: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Words: 284
Prompt: “Leave well enough alone.”
Characters/Pairings: Dino, Romario, references to Squalo
Summary: Dino can’t watch a man die and feel nothing. He’s not that cold-blooded. Romario muses that his boss is still rather naïve in that department; just like Dino's “little brother”.

“Do you really want to do that, sir?” Romario asked, pensive for a change when addressing his boss. “The man has caused far too much trouble.”

Dino considered this but couldn’t find it in him to care what was right and what was wrong. “He’s a man, Romario, a man that needs saving. Do you think I’ll just stand by and watch him die?” Anger flashed in his eyes. “I can’t let something like that happen.”

“Is that the only reason you’re doing this?” The soft inquiry didn’t faze the Cavallone’s tenth boss, not at all. “He’s a man who doesn’t have a reason to live now. Isn’t it crueler to keep him alive?”

“A reason to live, huh?” Those words had hit home a little too well. What made life worth living were those wishes to acquire some fanciful dream. His dream had already come true, but Squalo’s … “It’s not like he admitted defeat to Yamamoto, anyway, now did he? I don’t see what you’re getting at, Romario.”

“Sir, with all due respect, that wasn’t what I was referring to …”

Furrowing his brow, Dino tried to figure out what he had missed, and then it clicked. “You’re that confident in my little bro’s abilities, huh?” he half-joked, the other half underlying a hidden seriousness. “Xanxus isn’t going to admit defeat either, you know. I still don’t see the problem. Heal him, make him better, then we’ll worry about the future when the future comes.”

“If you say so, boss.” Romario didn’t admit the growing uneasy he felt, it would have been unnecessary and most likely bias. Besides, when Dino Cavallone wanted something done, it usually got done. No matter the price.
