Everything that Atsushi knows about his past has been told to him, or shown through photos and video.
The first thing that he that he remembers is waking up in a hospital room hazy with smoke and white walls. He remembers panicking and thinking of the old saying, 'where there's smoke, there's fire'. Unable to find a source, Atsushi had started freaking out, trying to escape the trail of smoke in the small room. He fell off the bed, pulling tubes and wires with him. His legs wouldn't move. An IV ripped out of his skin and the sharp feeling that followed confused him. Nurses had to sedate and restrain him before he would stop trying to pull everything off, before he would stop trying to get away from a smoke cloud that continued to follow him.
The next time Atsushi woke up, a woman and a man stood over him, teary eyed and reassuring. Atsushi blinked up at them, unable to distinguish their features or identity through blurry vision. They tumbled over each other's words, speaking of how they never thought he would wake up, and that they had thought he would be in a coma for the rest of his life. The one question that they asked him, and the one that stood out in Atsushi's mind was 'Do you know where your brother is?'
Atsushi was forced to ask this couple, 'I have a brother?'
After waking, Atsushi had difficulties functioning normally. He couldn't remember anything from his past before waking up, and he was missing vital survival skills; he couldn't remember how to walk or how to feed himself. He knew how to speak, but didn't know how to read or write; he had also forgotten simple maths, and didn't understand a lot of things about technology. He forgot things like burning, freezing, sharp and dangerous. Atsushi's eyesight, once perfect, was now hazed and blurred.
He was immediately taken home by the people who claimed where his parents, because they were convinced he had spent enough time in the hospital. Over the next two years they started rebuilding the things that Atsushi had lost, teaching him to read and walk again, telling him of his past, getting him glasses, teaching him dangers, how to eat and when to eat, and just who he had been, and why he felt like he was missing someone rather important. He was home schooled and Atsushi latched onto the information, trying desperately to refill what was lost.
A year and a half passed before Atsushi started returning to some resemblance of his former self. (He had been in the coma for roughly six months.) He still had trouble reading things and had to recognize the characters slowly, and sometimes he forgot to eat, or that some things will be hot when you touch them. If he rushed or was tired, Atsushi could be quite clumsy and have trouble doing tasks that were relatively easy. Sometimes Atsushi could be found in meditation, reflecting on his inner vacancies. Even with his parent’s collection of photos and stories, they only filled only a slight part of that void.
In regards to his powers, they manifested the moment that he came out the coma. He felt like he was rising from a very far place, coming out of the mist and darkness of an empty mind. Since then, his parents, glad to have one of their sons back, encouraged him to understand this new occurrence, so that it wouldn't hurt him or others in ignorance. They were still careful about those less understanding, however, and tried to keep it quiet as possible - not out of shame, but out of caring. Information and knowledge quickly became an important factor in the Kisarazu household.
Atsushi heard about the occupation and later release of the mutant school, Ryuhana, and requested that his parents allow him to go there. He would seek a formal diploma of graduation and would also try and find some link to his missing brother. His parents allowed this and scheduled a meeting with the headmistress.
♠POWERS♠
basic: emits a smoke-like substance that he his able to manipulate by drawing it into himself or casting it outwards, with limited levitation if applied correctly.
restrictions: levitation can only take him as high as his height, ultimately, or else the effect will cease and he will fall.
duration: the smoke substance trails around him at all times, though it's more transparent when he pulls it into himself. Levitation depends on skill and concentration, and the weight himself and anything he might be carrying.
conditions: the smoke substance has no smell or taste, but has slight buoyancy to it, making it slightly harder to pass through than air.
currently: Atsushi trails smoke around himself wherever he goes. He is able to cloak an area of six feet square, partially cloak an area of twelve feet square, and throw a smoke mist across eighteen feet square. There is slight resistance when passing through it, but not enough to cause any trouble for people passing by him. When Atsushi draws the smoke into himself it takes a little while and careful concentration. His skin darkens enough to hide himself in the shadows, but there is still a dark mist that hazes around him. He is able to levitate by using the smoke as a cushion between himself and the ground. He instinctively changes the density of the smoke to accomplish this, but can't change the density intentionally. He can only rise a few feet off of the ground, and he can only maintain it for about fifteen minutes. He is able to levitate himself and 5 lbs of something extra - anything more will lessen the duration and height achieved. He can stop himself from smashing into the ground by using his levitation, but only three times out of ten at this point in time.
eventually: Eventually Atsu will be able to do a lot of fun things with his powers, though it will really depend on his control and concentration. The cloaking area will grow larger, and he'll be able to levitate higher off of the ground, taking heavier objects with him, or people, if the need arises. He will be able to control the smoke to a greater degree, making it into shapes and forms, or cloaking some areas without hiding others. At his best, Atsu will be able to vary the density of the smoke, solidifying it to the point where it could act as a shield, stairs or other useful items. He will also be able to eventually pull the smoke into himself entirely, not only darkening his skin and features, but the clothing that he wore as well. Using his levitation at a cushion for falling will be easier with time and practice, and he may be able to catch other falling people/items if they are nearby and light enough. Any durations and ranges will be discussed with the mods.
notes: To improve concentration, Atsu often meditates. His levitation depends on it so that he remains focused, and that he remains calm. If too emotional, Atsu will not be able to rise off the ground. However, it will be easier for him to hide himself if he is more emotional, since the cloaking and pulling the smoke into him is a defense mechanism, and is more instinctually activated in high-stress situations.
