I agree with you. Though, I first watched the series before it was dubbed when I was what... uh Junior High so maybe 14-15 years old and at the time I really loved it. Fuji is my favorite for the same reasons you mentioned. The show is mindless entertainment, great for when you don't want to think much and just laugh at how ridiculous things are. I enjoyed the bowling episodes the best. Those were... ridiculous, but great.

Since it's been so long, I didn't realize how the women in the show were so underdeveloped. I never liked the main girl. She followed Ryoma around and picked up his hobbies because she liked him. I found her a little pathetic. Like, get your own interests lady. But I never noticed how she just... followed him the entire show. Wow. Brings back memories. lol

Aww, Fuji is your favorite too? He's pretty cute. I feel very warm towards the characters in general, but they just don't have anything to do, so it's hard for me to appreciate the anime. And there were so many potential shipping moments that were wasted. If the shipping elements were stronger, I would definitely have liked it a lot more. Wasted potential!

I might not have noticed the portrayal of women in the show had I not been studying this sort of thing in TV, but once I noticed it, it's hard to forget. And if it were just the main girl, maybe it wouldn't have matter to me as much--but it was literally almost every female (I can't really think of any exceptions), and that drives me crazy.
