Book Rec: Havemercy by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett
I really can't say how much I love this book. It has everything a steam-punk book could want: mechanical dragons, a hot group of airmen who pilot them, lots of war and action, sweet relationships, and an interesting universe with magic. I am entirely in love with Rook, the nasty, dirty, foul-mouthed, entirely lovable pilot of Havemercy (and weren't the dragons' names hilarious? Thoushalt, anyone?). I don't see how anyone could not love him and his unique adversarial relationship with Thom. In fact, if I have any complaints, it's that the scenes from Royston's and Hal's perspectives were not nearly as fun or interesting as those from Thom's or Rook's. I found myself not wanting to leave the Airman and dreading having to go back to hearing about Hal's sweet romance. In addition, the fallout after the final battle was somewhat abrupt, and the complete lack of any two-dimensional female characters was odd, when the men were so deep and well-written. Still, this was a delightful book, lots of steam-punk fun in every way. Next up: Shadow Magic, the sequel.
