They were on the floor now.

Wooden beads that used to be a necklace- that for two weeks were Carrie's favorite thing in the world. The string had broken easily, the knot breaking away at the nape of her neck after she pulled at it hard enough. It was strange how something so precious easily became garbage. Just another grouping of objects.

Carrie stared at them for a long while before she even moved. Her bare feet were cold on the concrete floor and her hair was tangled, but neither mattered much. She'd been wrong and Momma had been right.

Nobody loved her but God.
