I have successfully moved out of my apartment. Huzzah! Actually, I moved out of my apartment last Thursday, but then I had a weekend with my ENTIRE FAMILY, so I only just now got everything out of my car and tucked away in my parents' house. I'm effectively going to be living out of my suitcase until July, when I put everything back in the car and head to Minneapolis. Please send calming thoughts.
At some point this evening, there'll be a new post on
Frenemy Cosplay (Are you following us? Why aren't you following us?) discussing the pros and cons of screen accuracy in cosplay.
What? Some people juggle geese.
Speaking of... well, not of juggling geese but what some people do, you need to hear
Michael Sheen's dramatic reading of Twilight fan fiction. No, really. You need this in your life.
I'm sure I could come up with a segue between Twilight and sexual assault, but I think it might be too easy. Regardless, the understanding of
protection from rape as a civil right is one we should hear more about. The article is essentially a rundown of advances in sexual assault policies on college and university campuses. It's interesting and informative, but what really caught my attention was this bit:
In fact, the DOJ indicates that women who are in college experience higher rates of rape and sexual assault than women of the same age not in college. It is estimated by the National Institute of Justice that between 18% and 20% of college women will experience an attempted or actual sexual assault over the course of their undergraduate careers.
I'd suggest that college-educated women are probably more likely to report instances of sexual assault, for a lot of reasons, which would skew that data. Still, it's a terrifying statistic, and it needs to be changed. I'm looking at you, school administrators. You go to fantastic lengths to keep your students safe from drunk drivers and illegal parking. What are you doing to keep us safe from sexual predators?
Because I don't want to end on a down note (and this video could be empowering to women. Maybe?) here's some good news and hilarity. Today, I started a friend on the path of a Venturoo with the help of
this video, which most people with a sense of humor will appreciate. (I want gifs of Jackson hitting Doc twice and of him pushing at Doc's face.) At the end, my friend (
this friend, incidentally, who, yes, might be a little bit gay) turns to me and says, "Oh my god, who's the guy on the right?" At which point, I explain the epicness that is Doc and Jackson and how Doc is totally my hero. Then I made him listen to Weep, and he was sold.
If I accomplished nothing else today, I accomplished that.
