Did you miss me?

1) In RL news, I am no longer the only gay eskimo queer in the department. One of the 2nd years is a wonderfully outspoken gay man and did a double BA in theatre and history. He and I spent 10 minutes standing in the parking lot talking. I <3 him already.

2) On the aca/fem front, as a friend put it, scientists have finally realized what sociologists have known for years: "Male and female ability differences down to socialization, not genetics". Duh.

2a) Joss Whedon's Equality Now acceptance speech is one of the best things I've ever heard. My new favorite quote: "Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women." <3 for Joss.

3) On the political front, this gives me new hope for our country: "Feds moving to dismiss some deportation cases". Except that the cousin who sent it to me said, and I quote, "Why don't we just all leave and give the USA to the illegals?"

4)Speaking of hope, Misha Collins is running a marathon for Haiti. I have no money to give. :(

4a) All -and I mean all- of my junk mail comes from non-profit organizations. I shit you not.

5) In honor of the first week of the semester, io9 is running a "SciFi 101" series. Today, they've listed 25 classic science fiction movies that everybody must watch. Therefore,

Bold the ones you've seen. Italicize the one's you've seen some of.

Metropolis (The 1927 silent film, not the anime. It's better than the anime.)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (The original, not the Kienu Reeves one. I haven't seen either.)
Forbidden Planet
Planet of the Apes (Once again: Charlton Heston, not Mark Wahlberg.)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Read the book. Never saw the movie.)
Alien
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (Saw 1 and 3. Not sure how I missed this one.)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Blade Runner
E.T.
Tron (I have such vivid memories of watching this movie. I'm incoherent with anticipation for Tron: Legacy.)
Back to the Future
Brazil
RoboCop (I get why this is on the list, but it's a terrible movie. If there are subversive themes, I lost them when the evil robot fell down the stairs.)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Ghost in the Shell
The Matrix
Primer
The Incredibles
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Children of Men (One of the most intense movies I've ever seen.)
Moon (I don't know why I still haven't seen this movie.)
District 9 (I have issues with this movie. I won't get into them here.)
Inception (Haven't seen it yet? Go. Go now!)

6) Oh yeah! Went to Wisconsin, bought stuff, had fire thrown at my head. Good times.

sociology, misha did it, frak the system, feminism is hot, links, meme, movies, update, teh gay
