Help! Help! I'm being repressed!

1. Got snark to spare? Well, you can pay someone for the privilege of being snarky on their behalf. Just further proof that you can find anything on ebay.

2. copperbadge posted a link to the article Omega Males and the Women who Hate them. He talks about the article in terms of the irrelevance of the concept, and, in a sense, I think he's right. However, I think it raises some interesting questions about the construction of masculinity in the media, as well as, in broader terms, the construction of youth identity in our culture. Specifically, I have to wonder whether the Omega Types described by the author are perceived as negative because of individual shortcomings or because of the unrealistic and contradictory standards of masculinity by which individuals' achievements are measured. Guys have it rough, especially young guys.

2a. I thought about this the other day, and I think it's worth saying that Feminism, at least to my mind, isn't just about women's rights. It's about gender equality, which means empowering men as well as women. Respect is a two-way street, guys, and we have to have respect and empathy for each other's experiences in order to have any kind of peace.

3. Parts of the Patriot Act were supposed to expire this year, but President Obama, bless his heart, signed an extension. Yesterday, I was joking with helioshyperion that I'm going to end up on a government watch list for advocating the overthrow of the American government (which I do, like, every Monday in my Culture class), and now that seems even more likely. Although Misha Collins seems to think they're slacking. Y'all, if men in suits come to your door asking about me, tell them I'm a good girl who loves her mama, loves Jesus, and America, too.

3a. Now I have a "fuck the system" tag, which I need to use more often. Apparently, "fuck" is not acceptable for use in LJ tags, so I've changed it to "frak the system" just so I can post this entry. It's censorship at work, y'all. Come and see the violence inherent in the system!

sociology, links, frak the system, feminism is hot
