Oscar Wilde Memorial High School is the last resort for desperate prep school parents. Whether they’re too smart, too unhinged, or just too outrageous, the students of Wilde High don’t belong anywhere else.
Characters
Jason Cooley (Chris Massoglia) is the latest arrival at Wilde High, and he just wants to make it through high school, honest. He’s got the grades, the ambition, and two supportive parents. Now, if only he could get a grip on that kleptomania, he wouldn’t have been asked to leave all his other schools. Mild mannered and shy, Jason seems ill equipped to deal with the hijinks of his fellow students (and teachers), but he’ll soon discover a side of himself that he never could have imagined.
Mike and Marissa Cooley (Mark Pellegrino and Kristen Chenoweth), Jason’s parents, love their son, but they’re at the end of their rope. The constant in and out of schools has put a strain on their marriage, and, though they put a good face on it, no couple can really be that happy all the time, can they? Luckily for Jason, his parents are so caught up in keeping their own problems under wraps, they remain mostly oblivious to the goings on at the school and the *ahem* unique character of Jason’s new friends.
Morgan Grey (Molly C. Quinn) is easily the most mysterious -and most alluring- of the students at Wilde High. Pristinely dressed, perfectly poised, and absolutely androgynous, no one knows what this shocking figure is packing between those gorgeous legs, and the only thing more shadowed than Morgan’s sexuality is her/his past. Rumors abound, and the students have a pool going on the nature of Morgan’s second chromosome. Morgan has a long line of devoted admirers, and this year, despite his better judgment, Jason Cooley’s at the front of the queue.
Sophie and Sylvia Worthing (Diana Agron and Ellen Page) are twin sisters with nothing in common, besides being too smart for their own good. Sophie is quiet, prim, and socially paralyzed, destined to be a Nobel-winning physicist, while Sylvia, loud-mouthed and leather-clad, proudly refers to herself as a digital revolutionary, hacking corporate websites and posting inflammatory messages on their pages. Sophie and Jason become fast friends, though he admits he’s a little afraid of Sylvia, who has her own circle of outrageous compatriots.
Gwen Kildaire (Claudia Black), known to the students as “Miss Kill”, is the sexy, buttoned-down physics teacher with whom Sophie is secretly, desperately in love. Over-educated and frustrated with her life, Wilde High isn’t her first choice for a teaching position, but she’s bound and determined to make the most of it. Besides, every once in a while, there’s that one student who makes it all worthwhile.
Escher “Shirley” Moncrieff (Brandon T. Jackson) is absolutely fabulous, and he makes damn sure that everyone knows it. Famously booted from five other schools for “inappropriate and disruptive behavior”, he’s Sylvia’s best friend and firmly believes that no outfit is complete without a handful of glitter and at least two inches of heel.
Douglas Rosebery (Misha Collins) is the school’s straight-laced English teacher, and his tyranny is feared by all. The one thing that makes his classes bearable, as Shirley informs Jason, is the fact that Mr. Rosebery is so severely repressed that everything he says comes out sounding dirty. Of course, the three-piece suits don’t hurt, either.
James Basil “J.B.” Ross (Zachary Quinto), the school librarian, is sweet and patient to a fault. Between the sweater vests, coke-bottle glasses, and slight nervous stutter, there’s nothing not to love. If anyone would take the time to notice him, that is. He was once, disastrously, married, but now his heart belongs entirely and unrequitedly to the unattainable Mr. Rosebery.
Simone Toya (Naoko Mori) and Arthur Wills (Joe Flanigan), a married couple and former nudists, are the school’s chemistry and biology teachers, respectively. Their classes typically have an air of barely controlled chaos, as they encourage free expression, independent exploration, and the occasional explosion. This can sometimes be a problem for Simone, whose classroom adjoins Mr. Rosebery’s, and the two of them have been known to shout each other down through the wall. When Wilde High is forced to implement a seemingly redundant “Health Education” program, Simone and Arthur team up to teach it, but the joint class causes tension that ultimately erupts in a prank war between chemistry and biology.
Alfred “Alfie” Queens (Giovanni Ribisi), the school principal, who has long despaired of ever gaining control of his students, much less his faculty.
Pilot: "The Last Resort"
Being a new student is never easy, especially in the middle of the semester, and Jason's new school isn't cutting him any slack. Homecoming week is fast approaching, and Wilde High is in a frenzy. A practical joke pits Sylvia and Shirley against each other for the title of Homecoming Queen while Sophie ropes an unsuspecting Jason into joining the decorating committee. Meanwhile, Principal Queens tries in vain to find chaperones for the dance.
