Here's to the revolution

I used to think that I was the type of person who would wake up from a dead sleep if someone broke into my room and tried to murder me. I'm very good at waking up due to unusual noises (windows breaking, knocking, a phone ring, someone else breathing) and sleeping through constant static noises (traffic, parties). I thought this would come in handy during (wait for it) the Apocalypse. It's like being able to sleep with one eye open.

I live in an old building. Pre-1900 probably. It has radiator heat and bad plumbing. When the building settles at night, it's a jubilee of creaking and squeaking. All that is ignorable and I can sleep through it. However, around 3 AM every night, the pipes do this crazy knocking sound every time the heat kicks in. There will be 20 progressively louder knocking noises. It's like some bad horror movie. I have nothing but nightmares. I wake up ready to fight for my life all the time, but I'm learning to sleep through it (4 shots of vodka before bed). However, all this is ruining my anti-murderer conditioning.
