A curiosity...

To those of you on my list who write, and plan someday to be published... I have a question.

Does anyone know the rules/guidelines on works that have been up online, that you may wish to have published?

For example... The stories I have been writing about Phillip here. Well, Shadorn and I are planning on writing a novel, maybe even a series around him and another character (to be revealed at the end of this story, but probably not a surprise). The events in these short stories will likely happen in the books, but it will definitely be rewritten. There are a lot of summary paragraphs to explain things that happened before the short story, and redundant description so those just tuning in can get in image of the characters in their head, that just won't be needed in the novel.

Is that sort of a thing ok? It is not like I'm actually publishing the whole novel online, or even direct excerpts... But the characters, world, and events will be. Also, it's being shared with a writing group, via my personal journal that is not indexable by bots and such. So it's not like it's in an extremely public medium.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
