Goodbye, brother...

Jul 07, 2009 21:35

A friend passed out of my life, recently... He was the strongest of us... Loved and hated... He changed my life and the life of a great many of his friends...

And yet, I am ashamed, for I failed the man...

There was a day in Dublin, Ireland, when I felt him pass behind me... And had an inkling it was him... And felt his pain and loneliness... But instead of stopping him or following him and being the friend he needed, I let him walk away... Now, I'll never get the chance to be the friend he needed...

He was one of our own... And yet I let him stand alone when he didnae' need to... And yet, while he stood, he shone... He always did... In a real sense, he was my brother... And so I am ashamed that I didnae' do better by him...

What I can do is honor his memory, by not letting another of us who is alone in this world go alone for long... And leave him a song to send him on his way...

"Lay down,... your sweet and weary head...
Night is falling... You have come to journey’s end...
Sleep now,... and dream of the ones who came before...
They are calling,... from across a distant shore...

Why do you weep...? What are these tears upon your face...?
Soon you will see... All of your fears will pass away...
Safe in my arms,...
You’re only sleeping...

What can you see,... on the horizon...?
Why do the white gulls call...?
Across the sea,... a pale moon rises...
The ships have come,... to carry you home...

Dawn will turn... to silver glass...
A light on the water...
All souls pass...

Hope fades... into the world of night...
Through shadows falling... out of memory and time...
Don’t say, "We have come now to the end..."
White shores are calling... You and I will meet again...

And you’ll be here in my arms:...
Just sleeping...

What can you see,... on the horizon...?
Why do the white gulls call...?
Across the sea,... a pale moon rises...
The ships have come... to carry you home...

And all will turn,... to silver glass...
A light on the water...
Grey ships pass...
Into the West..."

Be at peace, son of the Dreaming... I wish I could have done more... But I will love you forever... I'll see you again...
