*Struts into LJ land*

Prologue: The Discovery

"...Where did you find this?"

"In the Northern Crater."

"How long ago?"

"A few hours ago."

"...Thank you for turning this find over to me. You may leave now." The scientist said briskly to the two children standing anxiously before him. They exchanged glances, and the girl spoke up.

"Hey mister, is it worth anything?" She asked, her wide blue eyes staring up at the scientist with the utmost trust. The man smiled and gave her a quick pat on the head.

"No, no. I shouldn't think so. But I'm glad you brought it in anyway." He lied, the smile not leaving his face. The little girl gave him a broad smile in return, and the older boy frowned at her.

"What is it?" he asked, his frown turning into a smirk. "Kate said it was a piece of turtle shell, but I told her she was stupid because I learned from my teacher that turtles are reptiles, and can't live this far north because it's too cold. But she's just a kid, so I don't blame her."

"I am not a kid! And you're only a year older then me!" Kate pouted, giving the boy a shove. "Besides, I bet it's probably a rare kind of turtle that can live in cold weather!"

"You're stupid." The boy shot back, rolling his eyes.

"I know you are but what am I?"

"Stupid!"

"Jerk!"

"Moron!"

"Mamma's boy!"

"QUIET!"

The two children abruptly stopped their bickering, and stared up at the scientist in shock. The man scowled down at the children over his desk. "I appreciate that you brought this to me," he motioned to the shell-like object that sat on his desk "But do you know what would make me even more happy?"

The children shook their heads silently. The scientist leaned forward, his face inches from the kids. "If you would be so kind as to leave. Now." He growled, fixing the two with a glare. They nearly tripped over themselves scampering out of the room, letting in a cold draft of air and a few flakes of snow as they opened the door, before it obediently clicked shut behind them. The scientist shook his head, muttering under his breath about 'loud children' before turning to the object sitting innocently on his desk.

He had come to the Icicle Inn village with a few other curious scientists to study the Northern Crater, and see if they could find anything related to the JENOVA Project. It was widely known that the Crisis from the Skies had been there a month before, yet they had found nothing. The ones who had saved the planet had no clue what they had done by killing her. Years and years of research and experimentation, gone in the blink of an eye, never to be recovered again.

Or so he had thought.

But now as he stared down at the 'turtle shell', as the girl had referred to it, he began to wonder, and a glimmer of hope began to grow. It was small, because the chances of any piece of Jenova surviving Holy's path of destruction were slim, but maybe, just maybe, he hadn't been wasting his time by coming to this forsaken patch of ice.

After a moment's deliberation, he picked up the phone on his desk and began to dial a number. If he was right, he saw a major promotion in his future.

HAHA, PROCRASTINATION. TAKE THAT. IN THE EYE.
