“Kitty, Kitty!” I heard and I woke up quickly. I was still in the bus and John was shaking me.

“Hurry up!” he said, and I was confused at what he wanted me to do. Then I noticed I was phased halfway through the bus seat. I phased up with his help and looked around to see if anyone saw. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that no one was giving us “the look”. I had seen that look from my parents when I went through my bed for the first time and landed on the kitchen table, where they were eating breakfast.

“Are you okay?” John’s voice broke my thoughts. I looked up at him.

“Yeah. Fine. That happens sometimes.” I said, referring to me phasing while I was sleeping.

“We’re almost there.” He said, and I could see traces of excitement on his face. My face brightened at the thought of John and I living in New York City together.

“We’re entering the city.” The bus driver said over the radio system. For the next few minutes, John and I were silent as we passed through the streets of the city. I smiled widely as the bus came to a stop on one of the streets near Broadway. People were bustling around and I grabbed my suitcase from the top.

“Ready?” John asked. I nodded and we made our way to the front of the bus. I muttered thank you to the bus driver, but he gave me “the look” and I knew that he recognized me as a mutant. We stepped of the bus and I looked around at the city.

“We’re here!” I squealed, unable to contain my excitement. John smiled at me and took my hand.

“C’mon little girl, you wouldn’t want to get lost, would you?” John teased me and I giggled. He took a map out of his pocket and studied it.

“Alright so we’re not too far.” He said and started walking straight. I followed him, looking at all the different shops and buildings, amazed at it all. We walked for about a half an hour when John stopped at building with many fire escapes.

“Here it is.” He said and we climbed up the stairs, lugging our suitcases behind us. He opened the door and looked around for a minute.

“We’re upstairs.” He said, and took my suitcase for me.

“Thanks.” I said, blushing a little. He noticed this and smiled turned away and started to walk up the stairs. I followed him up two staircases and then he turned down a hallway and stopped at a door, taking a key out of his pocket. He put the suitcases down and pushed the key in the door and opened it. He kicked the suitcases inside and I giggled at this sight and walked in our new home for now. I gasped and smiled. It was a cute little apartment, the kitchen in the front, which had wallpaper with flowers and a table, and a fridge and toaster oven. I followed John into the living room and smiled at what I saw. The room was painted cream and it had framed pictures on the walls, with a couch and a few chairs around a coffee table.

“This is so cool.” I said quietly, watching John’s pleased expression grow as he saw the apartment. He opened a door near the living room and I went in with him. There was a queen sized bed and a skylight, with sunlight pouring in the room. The walls were painted like the living room, and there was a dresser and a desk, and there were also artsy pictures around the room.

“I guess we’re sleeping together.” John said and I blushed at the thought. He laughed at my expression and I ran over to him and hugged him.

“Oh John, this is so good. I mean really. I love it.” I said and he picked me up. I looked into his eyes, and knew that I did the right thing, coming here with him.

“I’m glad you came back.” I said, and he smiled.

“I’m glad I did too.” He said, pulling me into a kiss. I was surprised at first, but then I kissed him back. After about a minute, we pulled apart and he put me down, still holding my hand. He led me to the sliding door, which had a small balcony, leading to the fire escape. We had a good view of the city, and I suddenly felt very tired. I yawned and noticed John was doing the same thing.

“Want to sleep?” he asked and I nodded and we went inside. It was 8:00 in the morning, since we left at night, but I didn’t get that much sleep on the bus.

“I’m going to change.” I said and phased into the kitchen, grabbing my suitcase. I phased into the bathroom and grabbed my pajamas out of my suitcase and quickly put them on. I went into our room and saw that John was already sleeping on the bed, not bothering to change. I smiled and got under the covers and closed my eyes, falling asleep to John’s steady breathing.

I opened my eyes, wondering why I wasn’t in my room in the mansion. Then I remembered. I was in New York City with John. I looked over to see if he was still sleeping and he wasn’t there. I jumped out of bed.

“John?” I shouted. There was no answer. I went into the kitchen and saw a note on the table.

Kitty, it read, I went to go get us some food. I didn’t want to wake you up. I’ll be back by 5:00. I glanced at the clock and saw it was 4:30. I went into our bedroom and saw the suitcases on the floor. I opened John’s and started to put the clothes into the dresser. I laughed when I saw that there were at least ten lighters packed on the bottom of the suitcase, all of them with different designs. I finished unpacking his clothes and began with mine. About ten minutes later I finished, and heard the phone ring. I ran towards the noise and found the phone. I tentatively picked it up, not knowing if I should.

“Hello?” I asked more than greeted, and a gruff voice answered.

“Kitty? Is that you? It’s Logan.” He said, and I smiled.

“Hi! How are you?” I asked him, happy to here from him, even though it hasn’t even been a day since John and I left.

“I’m good. What about you? How do you like the place?” He asked, laughing at my eagerness to talk to him.

“Oh, we love it! It’s like perfect, and it even has this balcony like thing…” I babbled, describing the apartment to him.

“That’s good, how was your ride there?” he asked once I finished rambling.

“It was alright.” I said, even though I slept through it.

“Well I got to go give the kids a danger room session, but I’ll talk to you soon.” He said gruffly, and I suddenly missed the Institute a lot.

“Okay. Tell everyone I said hi, and John does too, he’s just getting some food somewhere. Bye Logan!” I said.

“See ya kid.” He replied, and hung up just as the door opened. I turned around as I put the phone down and saw John bringing in a few bags.

“Who was that?” he asked, placing the bag on the counter, which smelled like Chinese Food.

“Logan. He just wanted to see how we were getting along.” I said, looking hungrily at the bag.

“Guess who I saw?” John said, looking sort of pissed off.

“Who?” I said, giving him my full attention.

“My dad.” He said, avoiding my gaze.

“What?” I said, knowing that his dad had tried to beat his mutation out of him when he was younger.

“I was on Broadway Street and I saw him and he didn’t say anything. He just stopped walking for a minute and stiffened and then kept walking, like I wasn’t even there.” He said quietly.

“Oh John, I’m sorry.” I said crossing the room to give him a brief hug.

“It’s okay. He’s probably here for business or something. I don’t think we’ll see him again.” He said, and changed the subject.

“So, food.” He said, and started to open the bag. I looked at him for a moment; worrying about the memories he had by just looking at his father.

“I got Chinese food.” He said, handing me a vegetable egg roll and a carton of rice.

“Thanks. I put away our clothes.” I said, beginning to eat.

“Yeah. This place is nice. Thanks.” He said.

“For what?” I asked, knowing that he wasn’t just thanking me for putting away his clothes.

“For coming with me.” He said, smiling at me. I smiled back.

“Thanks for letting me come.” I said, and he smiled back, and we ate our food, both of us happy at the idea of living here, together in the city that never sleeps.
