Extremely small class again tonight. We had 6 black belts a green belt, the usual compliment of yellow belts and two three white belts. After I led warm ups Sensei Quinn ran us thru two hard basics classes. Focus for the night was (1) stance, (2) form, and (3) pullback. After lots of punches and kicks in place we moved into some good stance drills combining kiba dachi, back stance and then forward into front stance together into one move. Then, since you now have the opposite leg forward you repeated the process. We moved up and down the floor for awhile just focusing on stance and staying low while gradually speeding up. To complicate the situation we then added a punch while in kibba dachi, knife hand block in the back stance and another punch when we moved into front stance, again gradually speeding up as we got used to the routine. To finish off the class we put the white belts in the middle and went thru Teikyoko several times slow and by the count.
Second class was in the same vein as the last couple weeks - sparing stance combinations. We worked on several combinations then applied them with partners. One of the combo's is similar to what I sometimes do in sparing. It was however a bit of a frustrating workout for most of us as we tried hard to focus on points Sensei Quinn was emphasing - keeping back heel down, staying low, snapping the hips, etc. - while trying on the new combinations. As usual the more you thought about it the worse you got!! We were also working on backing up during the partner drills which several of us are also struggling on. Lots more practice should help.
And a good time was had by all!
