But our transportation system isn't one of them. The American Public Transportation Association will present RTA with the award of "Best Public Transportation System in North America" this morning to a handful of key players in Cleveland, including Mayor Frank Jackson and Sen. George Voinovich.
It almost seems like a joke that a shrinking city can receive this award, however, RTA has made huge strides in the past five years which have made my downtown commute stress free.
A few highlights from my experience:
• Dependable bus schedules.
• Free transportation for college students.
• Free trolley rides (every 10 minutes) in downtown neighborhoods.
• Cheap fare! $3 for an all day pass.
• Park-n-ride stops throughout the metropolitan area.
• Rapid train access to downtown.
I'm also hopeful for the Euclid Corridor Project, which will create an extensive aerodynamic, environmental friendly subway system by the end 2008 which will connect our business, theater and museum districts.
As a city, we still have a way to go, but achievements like this show we're on our way.
But then again, I'm just one commuter talking.
