I had a conversation a few days ago with the people in my department and there was a general consensus amongst the senior staff that the status quo isn’t working.
In May of 2006, the Director of our department went out on medical leave for a diagnosis of cancer. She was diagnosed with type 4 cancer (there is no type 5) which relays the seriousness of the original diagnosis. While it does look like she has beaten the cancer, even she has told us that it is doubtful that she is coming back to work, or if she did. . .she doubts it would be in the same capacity as when she left.
During her absence, I was given the acting title of Director and have not only been doing all of my work, but have been filling in for her during the past 14 months. The woman who manages all of our corporate leases has been picking up some of my responsibilities in order to take some of the pressure off.
Of course, there has been no recognition of our actions. No financial compensation. Nothing. Part of the problem is that our sector head is close with our Director, and despite the fact that she is constantly saying she doubts her return to work. . .he won’t hear of it. In his mind, she will be coming back in one day and he won’t be convinced of anything to the contrary.
In the meantime our department is operating above and beyond the call of duty. We’re presently 1.5 Million in the black with our budget. We constantly turn around projects in record time, hell. . .we’re so good at what we do and our knowledge that we’re running the accounting and security departments at times for the idiots they have who don’t know their head from a hole in the ground. WE have to show THEM how to do THEIR jobs correctly as they don’t seem to comprehend simple procedures. I think it is this fact that make us the most angry.
During budget creation last year, our boss accidently sent me a budget spreadsheet which had the annual salaries of all of the corporate sector employees on it. The same people who are clueless, that we are always having to hand hold and who just skate by day to day with no work ethic. . .are close to making 6 figures a year. Yet we. . .the department who actually performs and is keeping the sector afloat is making nowhere NEAR that.
We’re all close to a revolt in the department for being so underappreciated and unrecognized. There is a plan in the works to approach our boss and lay everything out for him. However with him being a very facts and figures oriented individual, we need to come prepared and come bearing documentation.
