I think you're asking too much from yourself. If you don't have any experience of the, as you call it, music business, or writing in the first place (well, I don't know if you do but I got the impression you don't), or any of it, you can't really expect to get to "the top" with your first piece. Give yourself a break!
Personally I can't say I've encountered any of the putting-down and lies you describe. Maybe I've been lucky.
I do agree that the more experienced people should give constructive criticism and not just smash you. Definitely. But I don't know - if you've happened to get a boss/whatever who can't do that, then just try to understand what s/he means anyway and develop your skills accordingly.
Well it was my first piece done for a printed media. And yeah, I've calmed down already, but you know, it still sucks to fail so much :(
Hm, well.. I can't say that it happens everywhere and maybe we know different people.. The thing is that if I start saying that all this lying annoys me, people tell me that 'that's how it works'. That you can tell people that you've worked with this band and this band *insert whatever cool name here*, when for real you didn't, but they can't check it, so they will think you're cool and would want to work with you too. I personally think this is pure crap and that things can be done in a different way. But what I have seen so far was either this, or sex. Which is also one of the things that pisses me off when it comes to those people.
I don't have a boss, it's a friend who has been in this stuff for years, but apparently knows nothing about working in collaboration with other people, especially if they're a lot less experienced.
Hmh - maybe the metal scene is indeed very different from the pop scene, wouldn't surprise me!
The people who try to tell you that it's "how it works" - well, sod them. I'm pretty sure you need to be two things to make it, which are a) talented and b) humble. That's what I believe in. I'm sure you can get there via lies and sex, too, and it's probably a lot easier, but I don't see the point in that.
It is actually a lot different. We could even see this, when we were working with non-metal bands, they seem to be much better people and a lot more pleasant to work with.
I believe in those things as well, but sometimes I see a different picture :/ People who hang out with bands, drink with them all the time (if they are male) or sleep with them (if they are female) quite often get much better spots than those who are more talented, unfortunately...
It's one popular Russian rock magazine, my friend writes for them all the time. She knew I am a big fan of Poets of The Fall, so she offered me to collaborate on this interview, because I also wanted to try myself out. Well, it didn't work that well :(
Sure, but it's a question of choice, always. Also, hanging out with bands happens and is unavoidable, really, but it does not rule out talent. As you say above, you either can write or you can't. The rest you choose.
