It's been a crazy few days. Really up, really down.
Last night I was subjected relatives singing karaoke and butchering everything from Thin Lizzie to Whitney.
Then I proceeded to get into a viscious argument about politics after one too many Coors Lights, and only managed to depress myself because people continue to see gays as less than human.
I'm not going to preach about it, though. I think Andrew Sullivan, in his book Love Undetectable: Notes on Friendship, Sex and Survival., says is better than I ever could.
"[Marriage] is the mark of ultimate human respect; and it's automatic, unthinking, casual denial to gay men and women is the deepest psychological amd political wound imaginable.
This particular qaulity of marriage [the presentness of human digntity] is one we have long recognized, which is why it has always been granted in free societies with no condiditons attatched. Marriage is not granted to people so long as they live up to its responsibilites; and it is not taken away from them if they don't. The right to marry is understood as a given, almost definitional of both human autonomy and political citizenship. In American consitutional law, it is accorded a status deeper and more fundamental even than the right to vote or the right to free speech; it is deemed to be lodged not in the Bill of Rights but in the Declaration of Independance itself. . .Indeed it has been understood--and rightly understood--that the denial of this right to anyone for any reason is a violation of liberty fo profound that it negates that person's citizenship altogether."
That's all I've got. More fic soon. And it shall be controversial . . .
