7. Heaven [284 ji]
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting. Pearly gates, white everywhere… Or maybe just nothing.
He was dying, he knew that much. A mission gone wrong, it would seem.
What happened to his team mates? He wasn’t sure.
What happened to him? He wasn’t sure.
He sighed softly; it was frustrating not knowing.
If he was going to die, he should at least have the right to know what happened…
Then he felt it, a little tug and a seeping warmth in his chest.
Ah, this must be it…
My time is up.
The feeling spread through his body like wildfire; heating and igniting all of his senses and nerve-endings. Then came an icy chill that swept over him much more abruptly and he gasped harshly at the contrasting sensation.
It was dark. But not as dark as the thought it would be, or perhaps not as light as it should have been. He wasn’t sure. He could feel a pain in his chest every time he inhaled, causing a now unpleasant burn in his abdomen.
“Kakashi?”
What…?
He knew that voice…
“Kakashi, love, can you hear me?”
With a groan-and far more effort than it should have taken-Kakashi turned his head slightly and cracked open his eyes, trying to ignore the burning of the sterile light on his retinas.
Before him he saw the slightly blurred brown shape of a person; dark hair pulled back, rich brown eyes wide and moist, a light scar marring what looked to be a very fine face, and a slightly crooked and watery smile that seemed to light his heart on fire.
Ah, Kakashi thought, dazedly. So this is heaven.
He was sure of it.
