OK, I can't figure out why it's all grey background. I have to stop fiddling with it or I'm afraid I'll really mess it up.

first, it does not appear gray, are you sure you are not extremely tired and being fooled by the way in which text is highlighted in gray while viewing it in LJ's rich text mode once you have placed it beneath an LJ cut?

I've witnessed a couple of those done in the nursing home by a nurse. Icky. I've also heard tales of older folks going in after it themselves.
