Well, Silviefox and I just went to see the new Star Trek movie. I didn't like it very much. Looks like they took all the Star Trek culture and threw it out the window. The characters didn't act anything like what you might have expected of them, with the possible exception of Cap'n Kirk, who mostly ran around beating people up the entire movie (kind of like he did in most of the movies). I thought it was unusual to see Spock making out with Uhura, even though Spock's home planet had just been blown up. Maybe genocidal death makes him horny?
Even the ships didn't make much sense...the sizes were wrong and "illogical." The only consistency seemed to be in the uniforms. The plot line didn't make too much sense and was slightly reminiscient of Star Trek Nemesis (though obscenely warped).
The special effects were rather poorly defined and disappointing. It was really hard to tell what was going on sometimes due to all the explosions (explosions in space don't look like that, by the way...due to this little thing called vacuum).
If they wanted to make a space movie, why call it Star Trek, if they aren't going to remain consistent with the story lines? Obvious answer: marketing.
Still, it was entertaining, I suppose. I think the ships and special effects from the 60's television show were better, though. All in all, you'll probably enjoy it if you aren't a hard-core 'Trek fan. If you are hard core, you'll be disapointed that all the story lines you've enjoyed since 1966 are disregarded in the same guise as the "it was all a dream" story line from Dallas. Now, all of the "canon" 'Trek TV shows, movies and spin-offs "never happened" due to the "alternate time-line" created by the time travel in this movie.
So, thank you Hollywood, for destroying the enjoyable shows you put out in the past. Isn't it great that they want to "improve" everything, in order to make more money? Maybe next year, they'll have an Indiana Jones movie where his father actually dreamed everything and none of it happened, but wow, look at the new special effects and GIVE US YOUR MONEY!
