Say what you like about Dad, but he cooks a damn good leftover chicken noodle stew.
So what have I been doing this summer? Let's see..
I took up a tutoring job with Amanda, a first year in Japanese. That ended mid-July and went pretty well, although I worry she won't remember any of it come school's start. I ought to call up and check on her. Earned almost $200 from that, which went towards a new computer. Bigod it kicks rump, at least compared to the wreck I'm on right now. 17" flatpanel monitor. According to Steve, a nonintegrated graphics card would have been better, but Dad says that computers are so cheap I can just buy a better one in a few years instead of upgrading. I don't really like that school of thought, but Gilgamesh should last me until I'm through grad school. I hope. Once we get it set up down in Pennsylvania, my scanner should finally start working again.
Have started eating healthier as well, and it's doing me a world of good. Now to just start exercising regularly, which I should start when I get down to Allegheny. There's so many things I want to do there - archery, ballroom dancing, horseback riding, karate - and I'll need to keep up my strength. Got my black belt a few weeks ago. The test was three hours long, but I felt that it should have been more difficult, somehow. I hope the next dojo I'm at will be a challenge for me; I want to start over at white belt and work my way up again.
For now, though, I get to lord over everyone at the dojo. They must call me "Sir" and I can give them push-ups and shout as much as I want. Mwahaha. I've been trying to get in as much teaching as I can these past few days. Not for the ego trip. Really. Stop looking at me like that. I really do like teaching for teaching's sake. *cough*
Went to the Renfaire on Saturday. It was my first time and I.. think I went a little nuts. Not exactly shouting "Forsooth!" and brandishing sticks at people, but I was definitely like a kid in a candy store - starry-eyed, rushing everywhere.. just having a great time. I definitely want to do it again next year, maybe go back in costume. If I could volunteer somewhere that'd be great, but I don't know if my schedule will work out. The best parts were stopping in at a hat store - I forget the name - and chatting with the workers. Got myself a navy blue knit beret with a bead decoration, which I took home in a Chinese takeout box. Much fun. Also also also. Stopped at a booth selling real arms and armor and had a long talk with the proprietor. They're the only company that makes stage props for the Globe Theatre in London, and they're based in Minneapolis. How cool is that? I'd love to intern there - or really, get some forge experience anywhere. I miss Bobo's jewelry class, I do.
Been raiding the library and taking bike rides, although it's too cold for that now. Since we leave in two days everyone's running around in a frenzy packing (yes, me too) and making last-minute preparations except the dogs. They just lie down any old where and get in our way, but it's good to have them around. I'm going to miss them, I will.
Haven't really talked to any of my friends from school; I've been keeping to myself. Friday I went to a small going-away party at Mariah's house (my birthday twin) and had fun there. Emma was there, and Even and Laura and Laura and Jamie and Erik and whatnot. We sat outside on the patio around a covered firepit and ate gummies 'til ten, then went inside and watched old boyb and music videos. Surprisingly fun.
I don't think I mean to ignore everyone, but I'm used to being on my own, so I don't really go out of the way to talk to them, y'know? Ought to break that habit; I'm really glad I got invited to all those grad parties and people signed my yearbook.
Zelda techno rocks my socks off.
