So hi!
Not much going on of note, hence the lack of postings... School is school, relatively easy thusfar... had my first exam today (intro to life science aka science for stupid people) Probably got an A, possibly a high B depending on how tough Kaelin is on the grading (I can't imagine he would be incredibly hard)
But yeah, other than that, nothing really going on... Oh, did you guys hear about Haiti?
I want to Preface this with the notion that I am not a horrible person and do think that what happened was tragic.
That said: I am so tired of all the "Help Haiti" fundraisers and such... I mean seriously... how vapid and self-absorbed has our nation become. You might say "Please Matt, explain how donating money to a worthy cause is shallow and vapid." Well you are in luck because I am going to tell you!
Everyday in the U.S. nearly 3 million children go hungry. We have a growing homeless population and an even larger number without jobs. Charities such as Dare to Care and the Humana Foundation can only do so much... yet there are few huge national calls for help within our own country. The Federal government passed a law making Human Traffiking a federal crime, but there is no money to provide police with proper training or provide counseling and aid for those found and liberated from a growing problem all across the U.S. Often, these women who are forced into prostitution are charged with said crime, even though they have no choice. And what are we as a nation doing for these tragedies? Nothing. Why? because if we did it would show that there was a problem in the U.S., hurt our image. Why are we diving in, head over heals for Haiti? Because it is a national spectacle. Everyone will see how charitable the US was and how many people donated money. People will talk about helping Haiti like it is some incredibly rightous thing to do that makes you better than. It is not. It is the right thing to do. Just like donating to Dare to Care, Unicef, Ronald McDonald House, Books without Borders, Gilda's Club and any number of other charitable or non-profit service providing orginizations. But we don't go out of our way to "wear red for the homeless" with a few exceptions, Breast Cancer and AIDs being the big two... Wake Up people, start caring, regardless of whether or not others are looking.
