Eighty-Sixth Mission [Audio]

[Jak sounds tired and not quite himself.]

Damas.  We ... should talk.

[He hesitates a moment longer, then clicks the communicator off.]

[Damas had assumed the next time they talked that it would be about Carnival, or about the king's death. The quality of his voice surprises him.]

Where are you, Jak?

[The concern doesn't register in his voice.]

I will be there shortly.

[It takes a few minutes longer, Damas had been foraging for shoes on Deck 12. He raps on Jak's door once he reaches it.]

[Jak opens the door and steps back to let his father in. He's wearing a sleeveless shirt, and the tops of the bandages wrapped around his chest and stomach peek out just a little.]

You didn't find your clothes yet.

It is a large ship, after all.

[His attempt at humor aside, Damas is definitely still wearing the tunic and pants Bass threw at him the other day, and some of the armor that Phoenix found. His eyes narrow at the sight of the bandages. He walks in, but doesn't take his eyes off Jak-- he's now searching his son's eyes as he so often does.]

What happened?

I wanted to ask you the same question.

You went into Carnival.

[That is why he wanted to talk to Damas, though it's also a convenient way to dodge the question. He moves stiffly over to the couch, sitting on the arm. His head is still killing him, but he's not going to take painkillers while he's got any say in the matter.]

[Damas won't forget his thought so easily, but continues on Jak's thread of conversation anyway.]

I did. With Phoenix and a man named Santa Claus. I joined them somewhat on impulse, I will admit.

[It seems to be the only regret he has about the whole endeavor, that he didn't think it through beforehand. He chalks it up to his younger mind.]

[Draping his arms over his knees, Jak listens.]

What happened.

[He knows Damas died in there, and he already heard from Phoenix that Santa was behind it, but the details were still foggy.]

[Damas decides to abridge the whole tale somewhat.]

Phoenix was sixteen, not his normal age, or his normal mind. We ventured into Carnival on the presumably false information that the Captain's quarters were located there. We were attacked, Santa Claus threw Phoenix to one of the bears. He was wounded. I defended him.

[He falls quiet for a moment.]

Some... things, made of paper, fell on us, as well as the bears. Santa Claus had fled by that point. I assisted Phoenix, and tried to help him escape.

[Of course, that was when his skin had started coming off.]

Because of his concern for me, he very nearly died.

[And Damas wasn't about to let that happen.]

[Listening quietly, the only sign that Jak is paying attention is when his fists clench at the idea of Phoenix surviving when his father had to die. It wasn't fair, it wasn't fair.

And he would hunt down Santa and make him pay.

Hn.

[The mention of the paper charms grabs his attention though, and he looks up.]

Paper? Were they sticky?

[He gives a simple nod.]

They were. I was able to remove Phoenix's-- he had rather limited mobility at the time, due to his injuries.

I've seen them before.

[Kage never told him exactly what they'd do, but the absolute panic from the First Mate when he told Jak to rip them off had been explanation enough.

Which meant his father likely had a very painful death.]

Avoid them.

[He says this very quickly and with more force than he intended. He continues after a short pause.]

I was dead soon after I told Phoenix to leave me. I was not aware he had survived the ordeal until I came back.

[A little taken aback at the emotion behind that command, Jak just nods. He wants to tell Damas how it had felt to lose his father again, even if he was only aware of it after he was resurrected by the system. He wants to take it out on Phoenix, and kill Santa, and be mad at Damas for being so self-sacrificing.

Jak didn't want Phoenix to get out alive, he just wanted his father.]

[Damas, in the silence that followed his account of the events, finally sat on the couch himself. He passes a hand over his face in the way his son is wont to do. He does not look at Jak, he focuses straight ahead.]

I will not deny that it was foolish and rash. However, I do not regret my actions.

I will never let any innocent die when I know that I have the ability to prevent it. I have had too many lives stolen from me to allow it to happen again.

[Despite Spargus' penchant for bloodshed, the old king was not just going to let an innocent fall. Wastelanders might be considered savage, but they were still human.]

It was Phoenix.

[Jak says it as if it explained everything. Phoenix who had once wished him dead, Phoenix who had been involved in Dark Eco torture programs. And Phoenix who took his father from him.]
