Seventy-Eighth Mission [OPEN COMMENTLOG]

Nov 25, 2009 18:10

[Jak's out of the brig.  Actually, he's been out for most of the day, but after taking the time to raid the medical bay for bandages to cover his wrists and ankles, and to bind his ribs -- the Major broke quote a few in their scuffle -- he's holed himself back up in his room with Daxter.]

[Phoenix honestly has no idea that Jak's room is on this deck. He's simply exploring for the sake of learning more about this ship and looking for anything he can possibly use to get off of it.]

[As much as Jak doesn't want to leave his room quite yet, he is hungry. Six days of cold gruel in the dungeon has left him with a hell of an appetite, and he grudgingly steps out into the hallway in search of food.

He doesn't even notice the other man at first, too wrapped up in his own thoughts.]

[Jak's exit is unexpected, and Phoenix very nearly runs into him. The apology is on his lips before he realizes that that blond hair and short figure is familiar.]

My apologies-

You.

[Woah! Jak takes a step back to avoid bumping straight into the man. He raises an eyebrow. Those ears ...]

Do I know you?

[Razer had mentioned that Jak might not recognize him, but at the time, Phoenix had been focusing on other aspects of that conversation and that part didn't register.

Phoenix's voice is flat.]

Amusing. Is all that dark eco starting to eat your memories, Jak? Or is absentmindedness typical of you?

[His eyes narrow, and folds his arms, scowling.]

How do you know my name?

[The comments about his memories make him wonder if he really should remember this man. After all, he's forgotten other things.]

[Congratulations, Jak, you've made Phoenix roll his eyes.]

A man chases me across half the Brink, shoots my airship's engines full of holes, then picks a fight with me at my own helm. I would think I would know his name.

Or, don't tell me, you've forgotten everything? Keira, the eco seeker, your pet hamster? Do stop me if I start ringing any bells.

You know Keira?

[Jak blinks, then shakes his head.]

Wait a second ... the Brink is real?

[He'd heard mention of it in meetings to discuss the eco shortages after the war. Thanks to Praxis giving away so much eco to the Metal Heads, there was an energy crisis in both Spargus and Haven, and there had been discussions about exploring the Brink for any kind of eco source. No one had seemed particularly hopeful about the venture, and so it had been shelved as a last ditch idea.]

Of course it's real.

[Something isn't right here. There's no sarcasm, no anger, no instinctive twitch at the way Phoenix said Keira's name. Phoenix's eyes narrow.]

You really don't remember.

[In fact, something is off about Jak himself. Something about his appearance. Phoenix tilts his head.]

You have a goatee.

[Jak eyes the other man suspiciously. It's always unnerving to meet people who know him, when he has absolutely no knowledge of them whatsoever.]

Had one since I could grow one.

And sorry, but I have no idea who you are.

[Phoenix frowns, and this time a different conversation comes to mind, a conversation with Ashelin about the nature of time in relation to the Elegante. Could it really be...?]

Captain Phoenix of the Phantom Blade.

[He's watching you closely, Jak. Any movement you make, any facial expression, is being carefully noted.]

We are, or perhaps will be, temporary allies.

[Hmm. A thought. And now Phoenix is smiling cheerfully.]

Keira insisted that we get along until at least after the wedding.

[Now how will Jak react to that? That should be plenty proof enough.]

Phoenix.

[Weird name. Jak's never heard of you.

... wait a minute!]

Wedding?! Wait ... what wedding? You're not ...

[With Keira?!]

[That made it official. Whenever this Jak was from, he wasn't the Jak that Phoenix knew. There was no way that Jak would have ever stood for that.

But Phoenix is enjoying himself now, especially since there's no one there who can call him a liar.]

Of course I am, and the luckiest man alive I'll be with Keira at my side. Truly she is the most beautiful, intelligent woman I have ever met.

[Hear that, Jak? That's genuine admiration in his voice, and perhaps even the beginnings of love. If he hadn't been pulled from his world when he had, who knows where that might have led?]

For some reason, though, she thinks you would be a good choice for my best man. It's the only time I've ever questioned her judgment.

[Oh yeah. Jak does not like you now, Phoenix. Sure, Keira's not here and technically he's still interested in Zelda, but Keira's his childhood sweetheart, damn it!]

Yeah, I'll be sure to bring the confetti.

[GLARE.]

[There's the sarcasm and jealousy he's used to hearing. Without it, Jak almost sounded like a different person. Phoenix's smile is no longer quite so innocent.]

You do that.

[But even that smile fades as he considers the Jak before him. There's no alliance, no quest for the eco seeker to bind them, and from what he's heard, Jak's control is already starting to slip. But how badly? Razer had not given him any specifics.]

Still, I wonder if she would reconsider if she found out about what you did...

[What did you do, Jak, and how much guilt do you feel for it?]

[For just a moment, Jak's familiar scowl fades. His stomach clenches and his breath hitches, eyes widening briefly. A second later he covers it, but this time his face is twisted in angry guilt, and he won't meet Phoenix's eyes.

What would Keira think? She already hated the dark side of him, it scared her. He knows the answer to that question already; she'd hate him. She wouldn't want anything more to do with him.]
