So I've been itching to upgrade my desktop PC for some time now, and now that I have the money to do so, I'm at an impass. Why must technology have so many damned choices these days? :O
( Read more... )
I don't know how soon you want to do this but from everything I've read the core2duo runs faster, cooler, and more stable than the athlon chip. As far as video cards go you could always wait and see what ATI decides to drop. It will more than likely be an evolution of the GPU in the 360 which by all reports is a beast. Then wait for NVIDIA's rebuttal
The thing about that is, ati's next card is the rebuttal towards the 8800, since they haven't released anything to match it yet. That, and I'm not much an ati fan :O BUT this might be a changing of seasons for me, intel and ati maybe?
I actually got a chance to play in this department recently, with a friend of mine's new setup.
I'm digging the Core 2 Duo. Very stable, like everyone's been ranting about.
As for the vid card, I'd hold out for a moment, wait for the next ATI and NVidia offerings. With the nextgen platforms having such awesome graphics capabilities, the next cards will hopefully be some sweet competition for them.
And don't get Vista. For the love of god. Do NOT get Vista. I'll disown you.
The prices aren't actually THAT bad, as long as I do what I usually do and don't go uber top of the line, which is why I'm shying away from getting an 8800 :p
My current system (not the laptop, the desktop) is on its last legs. its really showing its age. So I want to do a total overhaul, and get a system that'll last me a long time, which is why I want a dual/quad core chip, and at least a 7950. :)
I thought about that, which is one reason I considered the 7950, which isn't too expensive, and has a lot of wonderful little goodies. I also considered doing dual 7600s as well, but, eh, who knows.
I just had to deal with this research when gathering together my file server. Granted, it was a different purpose.
This probably comes as no surprise from me, but go with the Intel Core 2 Duo. It is the better chip, and is worth all the raving it gets.
AMD fanboying will not change facts, and I know some Hillsborow Intel employes that will thank you.
Also, go with an SLI set-up, get the second best card, then when you need to upgrade, just buy that card again.
I'm still using an Geforce 7600 GT, and everything still runs great. Jessica's two 6600 GT have 95% of the performance of the one 7600 GT. In games written directly for SLI her box out preforms mine.
Eventually I will get another 7600 GT, it will be dirt cheap when I do, and my machine will be at silly awesome again.
haha, the AMD fanboying is just my years of good experience with them. Only recently have I had any need or want to switch to Intel.
Yeah, I don't think I'll go as low as the 7600, but I may just get a 7950 and then get a second one in a couple of months, that'll quench my thirst for now, especially since DX10 isn't even out, and I don't plan on using Windows as my main OS anyway, heh.
