Sooo I've been meaning to do an update for oh, what, a month now? And I swear that there have actually been Things of Interest that have happened in that time, but damn if I can't think of them right now.
On second thought, maybe not. My life's been pretty boring. The one good thing about that is that I've gotten a lot more reading done than usual.
The Arsenic Century
The Poisoner's Handbook
Gaslight Dogs
Chill (didn't finish though. Not really the book's fault, it was just that it had been too long since I'd read the book it's a sequel to, and the characters with the most screen time were the ones I didn't care about. And while there's a lot of pretty scenery, that won't get me through a book.)
Genghis Kahn and the Making of the Modern World
Misc. Sherlock Holmes
Super Freakonomics
Re-read several Diana Wynne Jones
Changeless
ETA: I knew I forgot something! Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X (Wanna drive future historians crazy? Have a love life that's actually discrete. There's something rather hilarious about reading serious non-fiction book that keeps taking detours to discuss who he may or may not have been sleeping with. And judging by what the author was quoting, it sounded like there are other books out there that are far worse.)
I do however have a ton of photos taken around town that I've been meaning to post.
I've got a thing for old brick buildings.
That church that people make a pilgrimage to pray on the steps at Easter that I can never remember the name of.
Here are the steps.
The Ohio river is looking unusually blue.
Last week I went on a tour of Spring Grove Cemetery, which despite its function is IMHO the prettiest park in the city. Our tour guide was extremely excited about trees, it was rather endearing.
See?
A very Gothic mausoleum
The interior. I actually was with a pretty large group of people. Looking through these photos I realized that at some point I've gotten into the habit of trying to keep people out of my shots, with the result that it looks like I spend all my time in deserted areas, even though most of them would have had people just off frame.
One of the markers in the crypt. They were made of sandstone, and there was actually quite a bit of water erosion. This was one of the clearest ones.
Detail, because I think the sculptor did a fantastic job.
One of these swans just showed up one day, and the Spring Grove staff have no idea where it came from.
