I felt guilty so I've been busy. They're short, but there's five of them, with another one on the way soon, hopefully.
Title: A Mother's Love
Claim: Vin Tanner (Magnificent 7)
Fandoms: Magnificent 7/Ghost Whisperer
Prompt: 055 - Spirit
Summary: Vin's not as alone as he thinks.
Table Melinda looked up when the bell on the door rang and noticed a man with a dark, battered denim jacket, faded jeans and cowboy boots. Not her typical customer, but she liked that all kinds of people came to her shop. He gave her a sheepish half-smile as he approached the counter.
“I saw the spurs in the window,” he began with a clear Texan accent. “Was thinking of buying them.”
“Of course,” Melinda replied. “Would you like to see them first?”
He nodded and she went to the window display and carefully lifted them from the display. A sense of unconditional love washed over her and she looked up to see a young woman in a blue summer dress watching the man wistfully. The woman turned and looked surprised when she realised that Melinda could see her, but she kept quiet. Melinda shook her head a little and returned to the counter.
Five minutes later the man was leaving with the spurs in a small paper bag. Melinda had given him a generous discount, not that she’d let him know that, because somehow she felt like they belonged to him. The ghost of the young woman lingered even when the young man had gone and she smiled at Melinda.
“Thank you,” she said simply.
“Do you want me to relay a message?” Melinda asked, a little unsure what to do with a spirit that wasn’t demanding her help. The woman shook her head.
“He’s a good boy… a good man. He was so little when I left him all alone, but he’s turned out well.”
Melinda got the impression that the woman was talking at her, rather than to her, that she was taking advantage of the fact that someone could actually see and hear her.
“Is he your son?” Melinda asked. The affirmative nod saddened her, because the woman was young, younger than her, and her son must have been little indeed when she died. Many times in her life she‘d wished that she could change the past, but while she could do a number of amazing things, that wasn’t one of them.
“He takes so many risks. He’s a bounty hunter, you see. I don’t think I’ll be at peace until I know he’s safe.”
With those last words she disappeared and Melinda saw her reappear across the street where the man was walking. She watched them with regret until they turned a corner, disappointed that she hadn’t been able to help them in some way.
