New story

The Book

The book sat on her nightstand unread. As it had for months. It had been a gift from her aunt and Molly meant to read it. When she went to bed it was left untouched.

Tonight was different, she was tired but unable to fall asleep. She turned on the reading lamp and picked up the book. A collection of fairy stories that her aunt thought she would like. Molly wasn't sure why she thought that.

"Maybe one story. Then I can get to sleep." She looked over the contents and found a shorter story with an interesting title.

The story she picked was only ten pages, that wouldn't take too long. About an hour later she turned out the light. It had taken all that time to read the story. Something about this story made her want to take her time and she lost track. She had enjoyed it and would definitely read more tomorrow.

Rolling over she finally went to sleep and had the strangest dreams. She tossed, turned and when she awoke felt as tired as when she went to bed. She looked over at the nightstand but the book wasn't there. "Maybe I knocked it off."

She looked around on the floor but there was no sign of it. What happened to it? She couldn't have imagined it, she knew it had been real. Getting up with a shiver began to cross the room. Then the phone rang and grabbing her robe she went to answer it.

"Aunt Connie?" she said, "Yes I read it last night." She griped the phone, "I can't find it now. But how did you know?"

She had a difficult time processing just what it was her aunt was telling her over the phone. "I can come up this weekend." a long pause, "I'll leave as soon as I get out of class Friday."

None of it made sense, but she would have to wait until the weekend to find out. Aunt Connie had promised her that she would be able to explain it all more clearly in person. With nothing else she could do Molly went back to bed to try and get some more sleep.
