Traffic light, cat and TV

The traffic light works again - but who fixed it?

A malfunctioning Beckley traffic light many residents considered an outright nuisance is finally repaired.  But exactly who fixed it is a total mystery that has baffled city officials.  During Tuesday night’s Beckley Common Council meeting, Mayor Emmett Pugh said state Division of Highways (DOH) workers were supposed to fix the traffic light at Johnstown Road and Vance Drive. However, an unknown person apparently repaired the light sometime Friday. The state workers only had to replace the old mechanical box, located at the signal’s base, to ensure the light continues to work properly.  “Someone fixed it, and we don’t know who it is,” Pugh said. “The state wasn’t here until (Monday). It wasn’t the city. Maybe it was a contractor who had done work on these before. With those boxes, it can’t just be a Good Samaritan.’  “Maybe this person will come forward.”  The traffic light had been out of commission since sometime before Christmas, and this had frustrated several motorists and business owners in that immediate area - and employees of a nearby beauty salon hung up a sign advising people where to call with complaints.

He did what? Stenson strips to play from mud

Henrik Stenson took 69 shots in the opening round of the CA Championship.  He was dressed for 68 of them.  Seeking any way to avoid getting his clothes caked with mud after a wayward tee shot on the par-4 third hole, Stenson came up with only one alternative.  So off came his shoes, his socks, his shirt and his slacks.  “Just the way God created me,” Stenson said.  Well, that isn’t entirely true, unless he was born wearing boxer shorts and a golf glove, along with having a wedge in his hands.  Stenson hacked the ball out of the muck, got dressed standing in the rough off the left side of the fairway, and wound up making perhaps the most entertaining bogey of his life. He ended the day four shots off the lead at Doral, but the only thing anyone wanted to talk with him about following the round was the Swede’s striptease.

You know... he doesn't look half bad.

Sofa surprise: Cat found inside $27 used couch

The mysterious mewing in Vickie Mendenhall's home started about the time she bought a used couch for $27.  After days of searching for the source of the noise, she found a very hungry calico cat living in her sofa.  The Spokesman-Review reported that her boyfriend, Chris Lund, was watching TV on Tuesday night and felt something move inside the couch. He pulled it away from the wall, lifted it up and found the cat, which apparently had crawled through a small hole on the underside.  Mendenhall contacted the store where she bought the couch, but it had no information on who donated it. So she took the cat to the animal shelter where she works, so it could recover, and contacted media outlets in hopes of finding the owner.  Sure enough, Bob Killion of Spokane showed up to claim the cat on Thursday after an acquaintance alerted him to a TV story about it.   Killion had donated a couch on Feb. 19, and his 9-year-old cat, Callie, disappeared at about the same time.

Math whiz, dead for 450 years, gets TV bill

A German mathematician who died 450 years ago has been sent a letter demanding that he pay long-overdue television license fees, residents at his former address said on Wednesday.  Germany's GEZ broadcast fee collection office sent the bill to the last home address of Adam Ries, an algebra expert who bought the house in 1525. A club in his honor was set up at the property four centuries later.  "We received a letter saying 'To Mr Adam Ries' on it, with the request to pay his television and radio fees," said Annegret Muench, who now heads the club.  Muench returned the letter to the GEZ with a note explaining the request had come too late because Ries had died in 1559, centuries before the invention of television and radio. She nonetheless received a reminder a few weeks later.
