I feel like I'm doing research again, which is nice. I don't get to do that as often as I like anymore. There always seems to be a conference on the horizon. As for the cost, I find that to usually be a paper argument. There's a million and one things we blow money on (imagine how much you'd save if you stopped buying booze). Supper turned out to be the most expensive meal of the day. Now that it's a salad, or maybe brochetta, sometimes a small sandwhich, it costs essentially nothing (a turkey sandwhich is aprx $0.70). This easily balances out the cost of a healthy breakfast/lunch.
And think practially. We talk about what particular fruit we like and you think what those fruits cost in Japan. Find out what a few different cheap fruits/veggies are in Japan and adapt to liking those (100% on the leafy greens).
In my experience, moderation is difficult. I didn't just cut back on my carb intake, I nearly eliminated it. I had whole wheat bread on my sandwhiches (well, was white for a while), and fancy bread on my brochetta. I had rice a few times a month. Virtually no potatoes. Cereal became my main source.
As for turning stupid, a definite yes. At the peak of my weight loss it was devastating. I had regular caloric intake and my body seemed to stabalize things enough while I was consistent (even though I didn't eat huge amounts and was working out tons), enough that I could get most of my work done, but the balance was thrown off so easily and then I couldn't get any work done at all.
Keep your fluid intake high and go to bed early. Sleep is important.
