Crazyhorse is six. He's bright, sometimes I think he's too bright for my own good. Right now, he's reading the second Harry Potter book. It's a double edged sword for me. I'm thrilled he's reading at that level - even better, he's comprehending at that level. But, I have some issues with the entire Harry Potter series. It may well be a good story ( Read more... )

I think with Narnia (I reread them not too long ago) it's a sort of darkness that I can explain better - it's an all-over darkness rather than a focused darkness. That being said - the last one is darker than the others but I guess I assume that he's like me and I was very young when I read it - seven or eight I guess is when I started - and it either didn't effect me or I glossed right over it because I don't remember once being scared while reading those books. Similarly, I don't think he's ready for the Hobbit just yet, I think he needs a bit more maturity. I think he could read it I just think he'd appreciate it better with some extra years.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have to make a new library list and hit the stacks before I go to my bookman. I hadn't thought about Dahl but I remember liking those books too. Thanks for reminding me! (I had no life as a child and did nothing but read...)

As for the story line of the Potter books - I think it had such overwhelming potential but I think there's only one way it CAN end at this point if she really wants to be done, wash her hands of it forever done. I'm sure there are about six million people who disagree with me but, it could have been done so much better in the hands of a better writer. What do I know though? I'm a wee little nobody who prefers her fiction in the sci-fi or suspense veins. Ask me again in thirty years when I'm lamenting being an unappreciated starving artist and maybe my lofty opinions will change :P
