Crazy on the horizon...

Things at work... are not mellowing out. I have been holding on to this fantasy that after the migration, things were going to be less nuts, but it appears that was a fallacy on my part. This year looks to be careening off into insanity.

Work blah blah blah... )

whining, work, writing

How does it work with layoffs? In this country the longer you stay the more they have to give you as severance pay if they lay you off. If you’ve been somewhere for 10 years for example you get around the equivalent of one year’s salary if your job is no longer needed.

Typically, you do get severance benefits based on tenure. I have no idea what mine would be, but I imagine there would be a little bit of a cushion. I just get really paranoid because I don't have a university degree or any fancy diplomas, and usually people with a job like mine *do*. I don't know anyone I work with at my level in this company who doesn't have a university education. It's extremely unlikely that I would be able to get a job with the same pay scale if I lost this one, hence my paranoia.

I was the same when I was still teaching. I had the barest minimum to do my job and lots of experience but if I wanted to go back to teaching today I doubt I would get a job! It’s scary.

Yes, that's suspicious when they get you to train people. My sister once had to train people in India, so that they could take jobs from her current staff. It's sadistic.

YES, THIS.

My last job was that, exactly. I was in a call centre at the time, and they outsourced our jobs to the Philippines. We had to act as senior agents to the new teams and they called us for help and to try and hand off escalations.

It wasn't the agents faults they were taking our jobs, so I never held it against them personally, but... yeah. None of us were particularly inclined to cut them any slack or hold their hands when they got difficult calls from upset customers. I remember once getting a rather desperate call from a new agent who asked me if she could please transfer the upset person yelling at her to me, and I was like, "Nope, you have to learn to deal with this."

I probably would have taken it from a junior agent had I not been losing my job. Not a good team attitude and all. But really, what were they going to do - fire me?

I didn't wish her any ill but... yeah. I just wanted to say, honey. You have a job and I don't anymore, so stop whinging and do it.

My fingers are crossed that things work out okay for you at work! I hate uncertainty when it comes to stuff like that.

I'm so glad your son had a suggestion that clicked with you :D

I'm sorry that work is so frustrating and crazy. I can completely understand the desire not to train a back-up.
