I've often thought that having a skull would be a neat thing. I don't know where I'd put it. Somewhere highly visible - a reminder of one's mortality. It's easy to forget that in the day to day and just spend a lot of time burning time.
To date, I've never found a place to get a skull. And I've been unsure of the legality. I also don't know if I'd be able to sleep with it there, or to ever stop being bothered by the question of where it came from, who it was, and whether they'd mind sitting and watching me all the time.
If there is indeed an afterlife, and someone hung my human remains in their living room above their mantle piece I would come back and give them a serious ass whooping.
Christian Afterlife: come back as a wraith, give them a heartattack. Hindu Afterlife: come back, grow up to teenage years, beat them in a dark ally. Buddist Afterlife: I have no idea, but I'd do something.
They're legal to have as long as properly cleared. For instance someone who donated their body to science, then you boought it from the lab (as happened in our case). I suppose a loved one could also will their bones to you, if you ask nicely.
There are shops here in the bay areat that sell them, such as The Bone Room on Solano in Albany.
