Vacation Project Complete!

I took this week off work to just stay home and relax for a week. It was nice to spend time at home with Kathy and play a little Xbox360 as well. It would not be a vacation however without a little home project to do. Our bed has needed a headboard for some time. We upgraded sometime back to a king from a queen size bed so our old headboard no longer worked. Kathy and I bought an old door ( about 100yrs old) at a salvage place in Ballard. I decided to strip it down, cut it to fit, and add some legs to transform it in to a headboard. Easier said than done however, as this door had about 20 coats of paint and was a stripping nightmare. After much cursing and hard work however I finished it today and installed it. Check out the pics behind the cut.

Here is the door at the start of the project. This was an inside door probably for a dining room so no door handle to mess with luckily and it was rounded on one side which made for a good top.

Add some eco-friendly citrus stripper.

And instant mess.

Ten coats of paint removed and some sanding. Thank god for my Dremel tool to get in the tight spots and were ready for paint.

Paint applied on cut down door and legs

Kathy with my finished product

Door bolted to the bed frame and ready to go.

Finished product with a made bed and one of Kathy's quilts hung on the wall behind the headboard. Not bad for someone who is typically very woodworking impaired. Thanks for salvaged & repurposed items that help people with no inherent carpentry skills to draw on.

Cheers.
