So it appears Nine Inch Nails is "back".
Trent Reznor, his wife, and his longtime producer have created HTDA and released a free EP:
http://howtodestroyangels.com/ He's in desperate need of a creative partner who will tighten up his compositions. HTDA is not bad by any means, but it IS Nine Inch Nails. The only difference is that Reznor is swapped out with his wife for the vocal duties. Her voice is sultry and smooth, but her phrasing and melodies are exactly what Trent Reznor delivered. It gives the impression that he sang the melodies to her and she just sang them as is without her own twist.
The songs are just a little sparse and go on too long. I don't understand how someone who is so skilled at manipulating sound can settle for such long expanses of bland electro-noise. You could argue that the smooth unchanging background music suits his wife's voice, but still... it's BORING.
There are a few moments that things will pick up for a few seconds for some beautiful unhinged noise and I'll wonder, why did it take the song several minutes to get to this point? Where are the hooks?
