I'm loving the New Pornographers lately.
Liz and I are going to go check them out in Toronto in October.
I'm sure most fans no longer worry about the idea that they're a "supergroup" (the 3 vocalists all have life as relatively successful artists in their own right), but I still find that aspect so exciting! They take a bunch of talented musicians, and combine their talents to form an immaculate colourful indie pop concoction. So many collaborations are interesting as a novelty, but lack the longevity the individual artists have on their own. The New Pornographers sound like a proper band, and are able to incorporate the eccentricities of their component artists (rather than mute them). For example, Neko Case has a very powerful, distinctive voice, but she is neither missed nor omitted from the songs Carl Newman sings. She provides backup harmonies as tastefully and expertly as she delivers her leads.
It's music written to tickle your soul. It makes me smile. :)
(EDIT: I have since learned that there is a 4th vocalist in the band as of the 3rd album, so some of those delicious harmonies I thought were Neko Case were actually this other female vocalist.)
