Both of the New Pornographers albums I picked up recently ("Challengers" and "Twin Cinema") required some patience before I was able to make a connection. Perhaps I'm just on a big New Pornos kick, but I'm feeling that there's something fundamentally different about my experience of music that makes me put in that time. It's like the progressive stuff I listen to speaks to my mind, but this music speaks to my soul. It seems foolish to fault music for not gripping me immediately; the first impression of an album is an experience you have only once, and listening to a piece with a sense of familiarity is the experience that is to last for a lifetime.
