awkward

As Liz's birthday present, I got her tickets to see a show at the Centre in the Square. We just got back, and it truly felt like something special.

The bill was under the banner of "Songwriter's Circle"; a few artists with roots in K-W taking the stage to share stories and play music. What I hadn't realized was:
1) all the performers were very unique and very talented
2) they all were on stage at the same time!

It was Danny Michel, Rob Szabo, and Shannon Lyon. They took turns playing their songs, and the others would either sit back or jam along. This format worked extremely well, as each artist's unique voice was showcased and you were always wanting more because you knew you wouldn't hear another of their songs for another few minutes. They were all fantastic vocalists, had interesting lyrics, and had interesting stories to tell. Shannon Lyon brought grit and passion to his songs. Rob Szabo had engaging songs that brought you immediately into the story, and his flawless vocals sent the messages straight at you. Danny Michel brought his quirky tunes and his similarly quirky guitar playing. The format meant that I probably haven't ever been as engaged by a show, since I was getting a constant flow of fresh, creative music.

They told us they'd be hanging out in the hall at the merch table after the show, so I convinced Liz that we should go say hi to Danny Michel. His music is so much a part of our lives that I felt like I should at least say hi to him. Of course, Liz and I are shy about such things, but I decided this is the day I'll do it. So I waited to talk to him... for about 10 minutes... right in front of him. Every time he was about to turn to face us, someone would hand him something to autograph or an old high school friend would get his attention. When he finally turned to us, my compliments were so awkwardly delivered that I managed to create the stereotypical awkward fan moment, with me telling him I was a huge fan and had been for years, and then him thanking me a few times with an awkward look on his face. Liz was basically hiding behind me through this. (I didn't have anything for him to sign since I already owned everything being sold.)

So there you go... I've officially had my first true awkward fan moment at age 24!
