objectivity

I generally listen to The Current on CBC Radio in the morning on my way to work.

I must say, it's probably the most sober, objective analysis of any topic that I've ever seen in the media. The host will never lead the conversation, she'll ask questions of her guests as a voice for her audience, and speakers from both sides of an issue will always be represented with a significant amount of time (and thus a reasonable opportunity to explain their position in detail). We'd have a much smarter country if all media dealt with issues with this type of objectivity.

I'd compare that to the bullshit hosts and correspondents on, say, CNN, who decide on their opinion first and then lead conversations toward those opinions. When Jon Stewart made his famous visit to Crossfire to give a brutal verbal beat down to his hosts, he was addressing the fact that this type of debate was simply "partisan hackery". (I believe those were his words.)

The media shouldn't be telling you what to think, it should be enabling you to determine what you think about a subject by giving you a way to understand an issue. It's sad that, in general, the media does not even attempt to serve this purpose.
