weekend

'Twas a good weekend.

Friday:
I hung out with Alicia, since she was in K-W for the weekend. We went to McMullins and then to see Jackass! Jackass was nuts! They definitely took it to the next level, and there were some things I just had to turn away for. I don't think anyone stopped laughing through the entire movie. (Well, that's not true... there's an elaborate prank near the end which everyone watched in silence as it was being set up...)

We went to Cambridge to check out Bob's place and hang out. We got lost on the way back, so it took us a while to get home.

Saturday:
The concert was excellent. It's too bad we didn't end up grouping together (there were pockets of us everywhere), but the music itself was flawless.

I had seen Isis earlier this year, so the 4-song opening set was sufficient for me. Plus, they opened with So Did We, which is the song I'd think of if someone were to ask me what my favourite songs were. (www.myspace.com/sgnl05 has So Did We available) Their set was flawless, was mixed well, and was very well received by the audience. There were definitely a number of Isis fans in attendance, since there was applause and cheering after every song.

After the set, there were some guys beside me who saw my Isis hoodie and starting asking about the band! (Who better to ask, eh?) It was good to see some people impressed by the band based on that set. Tool has a very wide audience, so that was definitely some good exposure for Isis.

They have this understanding of how to set a mood and guide you through it - you get lost in the music.

Tool was really on their game. They opening of their set was pretty intense. The Pot and Jambi were among the first few songs, so that was pretty killer. I was surprised they played Schism; even though it has a video, it has always struck me as one of their weirdest songs, so it was pretty cool to see that sort of self-indulgence play out in front of us.

Wings for Marie closed the main set. Really, that song was what I was there for, and it delivered. It's such a long song, but I always feel sad when the song is over. I can deal with future Tool albums being less fully realized than the first three, as long as they still have gems like this.

The encore was fabulous - Lateralus (one of my highlights), Vicarious, and Aenima.

The band themselves can be a little boring to watch on a huge stage (the way they use the stage is more like how a band would use a stage in a club), but I think they recognize this, so they had a pretty cool light/laser/video show. The performances themselves were flawless, and they even added some cool jam sections to some songs to mix it up for the live set. They left us wanting more. Great stuff.

Sunday:
This was also a fun day. Liz and I hung out and made some tasty fajitas for dinner for the family. Her friend Lesley joined us as well. I have a leftover one as my lunch today. Mmm.

Later in the evening, I watched The Simpsons and Family Guy (both entertaining), and then watched some Wildboyz and Jackass episodes from YouTube.
