Picking No 3 child up from school today I saw a little girl trip up and hit her face off the ground. Poor wee lamb, she was bleeding really badly from her lip, but am pleased to say she was fine after it stopped

Wow, sounds like you've been through the ringer as far as accidents and injuries. And as far as being unlucky, or even accident-prone, I think that's a possibility; but it may have more to do with who you are....let me explain.
I didn't have that many accidents, but honestly, I don't think I had as much fun as it sounds like you had. Mind you, I'm not saying its fun to be hurt.
What I mean is that it sounds like whatever you do, you do to the fullest. You wouldn't have gone thru the glass unless you were pulling some Gs, plus you must have been going at quite a speed on that bike! And stage diving, climbing frames, walls, yadda etc et al. You sound adventurous, and what's more, you sound like someone who wasn't coddled. "Oh, honey don't climb that tree you might get hurt."
Don't use toothpaste, you might get cancer. Sheesh. Don't eat sugar, you may get diabetes. FCOL.
DON'T LIVE, YOU MAY DIE.
I had a WAY more sheltered stultified childhood than is good for anyone. Which is why I went completely bezerk in college at UC Berkeley (not the best place to go bezerk, but that's a different blog entry).
I let my daughter do a lot of stuff by herself. I let her climb on stuff even if there's a high probability she will fall. Within reason, of course - I wouldn't want her to break a bone or have a concussion. But I don't rush over and help her with everything either.
She fell off a climbing wall at 16 months. She cried for maybe ten seconds and then she looked up at me and said, "play again, play again."
Ouch! Not even close, but I stepped on a rusty nail, got blood poisoning and came near to losing my leg. I did have some good adventures though. If you're interested, I'll tell you the elephant story. :)
I agree, you have to let your kids learn the hard way. My daughter is so adventurous, it scares me. There's not alot she's afraid of, the bruises and trips to A&E are proof of this. My son is alot more cautious, in fact he's happy to veg in front of the sports channels, and only goes out to play football (no trips to A&E with him yet).

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. LIVING WELL.

I can relate to you letting your child explore and learn on her own. They have to learn through their own experiences.
