Icon Tutorial #3

How to take this:
and make this:

For Photoshop 7.0 and ImageReady; beginner to intermediate; translatable?

Step #1: Open the wallpaper I gave you into your Photoshop.

Step #2: Image - image size. Resize the image to 800 pixels in width and 600 pixels in length, otherwise known as 800x600. If the website had this wallpaper in a 800x600 size in the first place we could've skipped right to step #3. D:

Step #3: Duplicate that layer once and set it to soft light at 100% opacity.

Step #4: Layer -> new adjustment layer -> hue/saturation. Set the saturation to +30%.

Step #6: Merge all the layers together.

Step #7: Take your rectangular marquee tool and set it to a fixed size of 100x100 pixels. Use it to select one of the four versions of the Chocobo's face. (For the face in the lower left corner you might have to paint (smudge, whatever) over that text with #FFFF00.) Then go to Edit -> copy, or ctrl+C.

Step #8: File -> new. Make sure it's 100x100, then hit the OK button. Next, go to Edit -> paste, or ctrl+V. A copy of the Chocobo's face you selected will appear.

Step #9: Repeat steps #7 & #8 for the other three Chocobo faces. Each face will appear as a new layer.

Step #10: To make the Chocobo face where he's looking to the left is easy. Just duplicate the layer where's looking to the right, then go to Edit -> transform -> flip horizontal.

Step #11: Now we need to make sure the faces are lined up together as best as possible. The easiest way to do this is to keep the one layer at 100% opacity and lower the opacity of the layer above it (for this image somewhere around 20% - 30%). Then either use the move tool or nudge (ctrl+any one of the arrow keys) to place the image where you need it to be. Be careful not to leave any empty spaces when moving your images. If you need to use your magic wand tool to select that space then fill it with #FFFF00.

Step #12: Click the button I have shown in the image, or click ctrl+shift+M, so ImageReady will automatically start loading and have our Chocobo faces ready for us to use.

Step #13: Make sure your first face in the animation window is the Chocobo I have in this image by making all the other layers invisible by clicking on the eyes next to their respective layers.

Step #14: Click on the button I have the red arrow pointing to in this image to make a duplicate layer in the animation window. Then switch out the images by making the first layer invisible and making the second layer visible, like I have shown next to the yellow arrows.

Step #15: Repeat step #14 until you have all the Chocobo faces lined up in the animation window like this.

Step #16: Below each animation frame there's a tiny triangle pointing down. Click on it to select how long you want that specific frame to be animated. If the preset times aren't to your liking then click on "other" to input your own value in seconds. My frames were set a 2.0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.5, 0.2, 0.5 seconds, respectively.

Step #17: Click the play button located at the bottom of the animation window to see how your icon looks animated, then click stop. Fiddle around with the framerates again until you're happy with the result.

Step #18: When you're finally ready go to File -> Save optimized as (ctrl+shift+alt+S).

You're done! ^_^
