How to turn this 
into this
Photoshop 7.0; includes selective coloring; intermediate level.
1. Crop and, if needed, resize the image to 100x100. Sharpen it to your liking.
2. Image -> adjustments -> selective coloring. RED: -100, -13, -10, 9; YELLOW: -15, -6, -14, 0; NEUTRALS: 6, -2, -10, -2; BLACK: 0, 0, 0, 7.
3. Image -> adjustments -> hue/saturation. Set the master to +55.
4. Image -> adjustment -> brightness/contrast. Set brightness to +7 and contrast to +4.
5. Duplicate your base layer.
6. Click on the "channels" tab, which is located here. You will then see this. (NOTE: This is what you see when your image is in RGB mode, like the image we're using here. This display will look slightly different when using an image in either CMYK or Lab mode.)
7. Select the red channel.
8. Filter -> noise -> median set to 2.
9. Filter -> other -> high pass set to 3.
10. Filter -> other -> maximum set to 2.
11. Click on the RGB layer and return to the layers palette.
12. Set the top layer to screen.
13. Duplicate your base layer, drag it to the top, and set it to soft light.
14. Duplicate your soft light layer.
15. Merge all layers.
And remember to experiment with different images! Try selecting a different channel, play around with the blending modes, or anything else. For example, like this image here where I used the blue channel instead, set that layer to soft light, and had only one duplicate of the base layer at the top set to screen to create this icon.
