ahh, many people would be happy with this change. :)
one thing i'd like to ask though - wouldn't the moderation queue be constantly (or frequently) full, with the influx of posts?

You're right; this may cause the moderation queue to be constantly or frequently full. Perhaps we should look into giving more people unmoderated access, eh?
