"Angel?" Xander whispered, his throat rough and raw. He was sure it was from him screaming - if only he could remember why.

Slowly, he stood, his legs shaking with the strain beneath him, barely holding his weight and threatening to collapse, tumbling him to the dirty floor. He scanned the area, surprised by the feeling of familiarity. He knew this place, remembered it, as if in a dream. He took a step forward, then another before he looked down at a large brown stain in the middle of the room - blood, his brain supplied. My blood.

There had a been a statue - a large statue - right here. A statue with a sword in it. Acathla.

Suddenly he remembered the pain of the sword piercing his abdomen, lancing pain throughout his body before the metal moved on and ran straight through Angel - Angel! He had to find Angel.

He forced his body to move, to run through the oddly familiar halls before he stopped at the open door. He froze as the cold air hit his naked skin. He needed to find something to protect him from the elements, especially since he didn't know what he could be facing out in this strange place.

Following his instinct, he moved up the stairs, finding a wardrobe filled with pants - all of them leather. They fit, just barely, but they would have to do. He fled the building, fear pushing him on, and he ran out into the night, looking for his lost lover. It was dark and cool and he easily caught the trail of missing vampire.

Running at full speed, he turned a corner, tripping over the large stone barriers sticking up out of the terrain. He was surprised that someone had already set a trap for him, that they knew he was coming. He would have to pay more attention to this new enemy, especially if they were already anticipating his moves and weaknesses.

Suddenly, he heard a sound. It sounded low and rough - nothing more than a growl or a whine. Angel.

He moved slowly, not wanting to alert the enemy to his position when he heard another voice, higher and lighter than he had heard before.

"Angel?" the voice asked, nearly trembling.

Anger and jealousy rose inside him. He glanced around the stone he was hiding behind to see a female - young and blonde - standing in front of Angel, her face shimmering in the light of the moon. He wondered for a moment how she had gotten wet but was quickly distracted as she reached back and pulled a round piece of wood from behind her, holding it high in the air above her head, staring at Angel as if he was possessed.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. Her hand drew back and Xander darted forward, placing himself before his lover, easily knocking the weapon from her hand.

"You do not touch him," Xander growled, his voice still hoarse and raw.

"Xander?" the girl asked, her mouth agape.

"Yes, I am Xander the Warrior."

"Oh my god, Xander. What happened to you?"

"I do not understand."

His voice. It was wrong. He didn't know why, but somehow, it was wrong. He could understand her but she could not understand him. He spoke again and realized he was speaking as he had before, as he had to his people, and she obviously was not one of them.

"Xander," he heard behind. Quickly, he turned and started at the pained look on his lover's face.

"What's wrong?" he asked, falling to his knees to take Angel's face in his hands.

"It hurts."

"What hurts?"

"She does. It hurts to be near her. I felt her and knew I had to protect you from her. She's wrong."

Leaning forward, he rested his head against Angel's cool one. "It's okay," he whispered. "Everything's going to be okay."

And as he leaned down to place a soft kiss on his lover's cheek, a large, solid object connected with the back of his skull and everything went black.
