In My Mind

Mold, maggots and honey. It seemed like a strange combination of things but it was the very formula that was working to heal the wounded warriors. Not for the first time, Angel was thankful for his eidetic memory. Somehow he had come across a book that discussed the origins of antibiotics and how to treat infections and he set about giving instructions to the healers and counselors. It had taken a while to find and grow all the ingredients for the medicine, but other treatments had been started and seemed to be helping.

Everyone was grateful that the Warrior knew of a treatment and his Consort could provide the formula to help their men.

But Angel still worried.

Xander had been withdrawn, even from him.

Especially from him.

The boy was going through the motions; training, eating and fucking, just doing what was required of him, what was expected. Slowly, he had begun to distance himself from the people around him. He started taking walks by himself, insisting on needing time on his own to think about things but whenever Angel went looking for him, he nearly always found the boy standing still as death, staring out over the battlefield.

Finally, the vampire decided he'd had enough.

Dinner was the same as always; Xander eating slowly while the Shaman, Ali and the others trying to pull the boy out of shell. They were unsuccessful once again. Angel watched him, taking in every detail, studying every nuance. He knew what he needed to do and he didn't want to get it wrong.

After Xander had finished his meal, they rose slowly as they made their way down the hall and to their room. Before the door closed, blocking out the outside world, the Shaman laid a gentle hand on the vampire's shoulder.

"You are being sure?"

Angel nodded soberly.

The door closed with an ominous thud and Angel sighed at the thought of what he was about to do.

Angel stared at the door, taking a steadying breath before turning around to watch as Xander stripped out of his clothes. It was the same as every other night: shoes, socks, shirt, pants and underwear. They were folded and placed in a perfect little pile on the small table before Xander turned and walked into the small room that served as their bathroom to finish his nightly routine. Clean and relieved, the boy wandered back into the room and prepared to climb into the bed.

Angel stopped him with a single word.

"Boy."

Xander froze, turning to look at Angel as if seeing the vampire for the first time. Angel never called Xander 'Boy'. He'd never dared. That had been Angelus' word, Angelus' cue to Xander that he was in trouble. Hazel eyes saw him, really saw him for the first time in weeks. Angel let his demon slide to the fore, feeling the power and authority rise inside him, making him stand taller, his face hard and unmoving. He noticed the subtle tremble in the boy's lower lip, the increased thump of the boy's heartbeat.

Growling low in his throat, Angel pointed to the spot on the floor at his feet. Slowly, Xander inched forward before folding himself on the floor at the vampire's feet, kneeling on the hard stone floor with his head bowed.

"Are you ready?" Angel asked, his voice rough and heavy.

"Yes," Xander whispered as he lifted his head to stare up at the vampire standing over him, silent tears streaming down the boy's face. "Thank you."

Angel smirked as his boy assumed a familiar position, preparing for his punishment.

But passing behind the boy's bowed back, the smirk slipped away as a single tear rolled down his cold cheek.
